The Not Invisible Act Commission’s recommendations were issued last week to Congress. The sweeping report calls for a Decade of Action and Healing. It was hard and emotional work over two years for the commissioners. ICT’s Mark Trahant has more.
The Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries and Museums met in Oklahoma City and ICT’s Shirley Sneve was there. She spoke with Joe Horse Capture from the Autry Museum of the American West. He’s the vice president of Native Collections and the Ahmanson curator of Native History and Culture.
A new museum features the tribes of Oklahoma. ICT’s Shirley Sneve was there to see what’s cooking. She visited Loretta Barrett Oden, the Chef at 39 Restaurant. She has a new cookbook called “Corn Dance: Inspired First American Cuisine.”
- The 35-member Not Invisible Act Commission held hearings across the country, listening to some 260 witnesses about their experiences, suffering, and hopes regarding Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. The commission asked for $1.2 billion for law enforcement and detention facilities and that the funding should be mandatory, not discretionary.
- The nation’s largest and oldest coalition of tribal governments surprised many with a new logo last week. On the start of Native American Heritage Month, the National Congress of American Indians said it is entering a new chapter. Next week, NCAI meets in New Orleans, Louisiana for its annual convention.
- A strain of bird flu is threatening the conservation efforts of an endangered bird. For the past 40 years, experts have tried to prevent the California Condor from going extinct. ICT’s Nick Parks reports.
- The American Museum of Natural History in New York City will return some 12,000 sets of human remains to what it calls “relevant communities.” ICT’s Demi Dupavillon has this story.
