A slice of our Indigenous world:

Artist Michael Naranjo describes his sculpting as his obsession. He is often characterized as “the artist who sees with his hands.” Naranjo joins us virtually to talk about his craft.

The Intermountain Indian School in Utah was one of the largest federal boarding schools, operating between 1950 and 1984. “Returning Home” is a book that uses the voices of former students to tell the school’s history. Farina King, whose own father survived the boarding school system, is one of the three authors. King is an associate professor of Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma.

Traditional Red Lake Ojibwe values are on display in such an incredible way in one new book. “Mashkiki Road” follows the adventures of three cousins as they learn aspects of their culture. The book was written and illustrated by Red Lake Ojibwe citizens Elizabeth Barrett and Jonathan Thunder. Thomas “Thomas X” Barrett, who is the inspiration behind some of the stories, joins us virtually.

Within Pueblo communities, it is very common to see males shouldering the responsibility of traditional clothing maker. Cris Velarde, who joins us today, is the cultural arts specialist at the Poeh Cultural Center near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Velarde also teaches traditional weaving classes.
